    Full Bio

Kyle Boehm grew up in Escondido, California, and built an unusually broad athletic background well before ever training jiu-jitsu. He took up rock climbing at age 9 and competed at a national level into his early twenties, and at 17 summited Aconcagua in Argentina, the highest peak outside Asia. Through middle and high school he competed in cross country, wrestling, basketball, track and field, and soccer, before playing two years of rugby at Northern Arizona University.

After college, Boehm turned to mixed martial arts, competing for the Rage in the Cage promotion and compiling an undefeated 3-0-0 professional record. Looking to round out his ground game for MMA, he began training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in December 2014 at 10th Planet Phoenix under John Botello, a black belt under Eddie Bravo. Grappling quickly became his primary focus rather than a supplement to MMA.

Boehm progressed quickly through the colored belts, moving into professional submission-only competition by 2016. His pre-black-belt run included gold at Onnit Invitational 4 (2017), a Subversiv team tournament title (2018), and further Subversiv gold plus a strong showing at the BJJ Fanatics Brown Belt Grand Prix in 2019 — a stretch that included wins over established names such as Kaynan Duarte, Dan Borovic, and Tex Johnson. John Botello awarded him his black belt in October 2019.

As a black belt, Boehm continued competing on the North American submission-only circuit, fighting out of 10th Planet Oceanside alongside coach Geo Martinez. He won 1st place at both the BJJ Fanatics Grand Prix and the King of the Mats Invitational in 2019, the latter earning him $10,000 after finishing four black belts via three rear-naked chokes and an outside heel hook. He has competed against several of the sport’s top-ranked no-gi athletes, including a submission loss to Gordon Ryan at WNO, and a decision loss to Nick Rodriguez at KASAI Pro 7 in 2020. Boehm qualified for the 2022 ADCC World Championship. His preferred finishing technique throughout his career has been the outside heel hook.
