Gracie Barra

Gracie Barra is one of the largest and most successful Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu organizations in history. Founded by Carlos Gracie Jr., the team has played a pivotal role in the global growth of jiu-jitsu, developing thousands of black belts and producing generations of world champions.

With more than 1,000 affiliated academies across six continents, Gracie Barra has become one of the sport’s most recognizable brands. While known for its structured curriculum and strong academy network, the organization has also maintained a long tradition of success at the highest levels of gi and no-gi competition.

    History

Gracie Barra was founded in 1986 in the Barra da Tijuca neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro by Carlos Gracie Jr., the son of Carlos Gracie and a key figure in the Gracie family lineage.

The academy quickly became one of Brazil’s premier competition teams, producing elite competitors who dominated national and international tournaments throughout the 1990s and 2000s.

As Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu expanded worldwide, Gracie Barra developed one of the first truly global affiliation systems, creating standardized instructor certification, structured curriculums, and consistent teaching methods across its academies.
