Residents nearby described the blaze, which broke out shortly after midnight, as sounding like an explosion.
Dozens of firefighters battled the flames through the night, but by morning only blackened, charred remains were left of the space. Gym equipment inside the academy melted in the heat, and the building has been left completely gutted. Investigators believe the fire was a targeted attack, though it remains unclear whether the jiu-jitsu gym or the fitness club next door was the intended target.
The incident may not be an isolated one. Just two days earlier, a Genesis Health and Fitness location in Taylors Lakes, roughly twenty minutes away in Melbourne’s western suburbs, was also hit in a similar fire. Police are now investigating a possible connection between the two incidents as part of a broader pattern of firebombings across the city. Fortunately, no one was injured in either fire, though the damage bill from this latest blaze is expected to run close to a million dollars once the destroyed equipment and two ruined businesses are accounted for.

As of the latest count, the campaign has raised $52,302 toward a $55,000 AUD goal, an outcome of 96 percent, thanks to 279 separate donations. Recent contributions have come from across the community, including a standout $3,500 gift from Mustang BJJ Australia and smaller donations ranging from $15 to several hundred dollars from individual supporters.
Organisers say every donation, regardless of size, will go toward replacing what was lost and helping bring the community back together. For those unable to contribute financially, simply sharing the fundraiser is being described as a meaningful way to help. The academy’s leadership has expressed deep gratitude for the kindness and support shown during what they describe as an incredibly difficult time, as the rebuilding process now begins.
