For Rodriguez, the victory represented far more than another win on his record. It was his first major appearance since a highly publicized controversy in 2025 saw him removed from B Team and effectively sidelined from the Brazilian jiu-jitsu scene.

The incident prompted immediate action from gym leadership, with co-founders Craig Jones and Seth Belisle removing him from the team.
Rodriguez later publicly acknowledged that his behavior had been “invasive, inappropriate and unhealthy,” while denying more serious online rumors involving AI-generated images or hidden cameras. He also revealed that he had begun therapy and was relying on his faith as part of an effort to address what he described as impulsive behavior.
The controversy had significant consequences beyond his departure from B Team. During an appearance on the Jits and Giggles podcast, Rodriguez explained that many respected gyms were unwilling to train him, leaving him off the mats entirely for several months.
Rather than disputing those consequences, Rodriguez said he understood why gym owners were reluctant to bring him in given the circumstances.
