Ralph Gracie Promotes Jair Bolsonaro’s Son To Black Belt

Brazilian jiu-jitsu legend Ralph Gracie has sparked controversy after announcing that he had symbolically presented a black belt to Brazilian Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro.

In a post shared on Instagram, Gracie explained that the gesture was intended as a continuation of a tribute previously made by his father, Grandmaster Robson Gracie, who had symbolically honored former President Jair Bolsonaro.

“Yesterday, I had the honor of continuing this same gesture, symbolically placing the black belt on Senator Flávio Bolsonaro.” (translation from Portuguese)

Gracie emphasized that the presentation was symbolic rather than a traditional promotion based on technical achievement. In his post, he wrote that a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu represents values such as discipline, honor, loyalty, and respect, describing the ceremony as “a moment of continuity, tradition and recognition between two families.”

The post also included a political message calling for unity among supporters and stressing loyalty and action during difficult times.

Despite Gracie’s description of the belt as symbolic, the announcement drew significant criticism from many members of the Brazilian jiu-jitsu community. Black belt promotions are traditionally awarded only after many years of dedicated training, technical development, and evaluation by an instructor. Critics argued that presenting a black belt—whether described as symbolic or not—to a public figure who is not widely recognized as having earned the rank through the normal progression risks undermining the significance of one of the sport’s highest achievements.

Others defended Gracie’s decision, pointing to his explicit statement that the ceremony was ceremonial and intended as a gesture of respect rather than an acknowledgment of competitive or technical accomplishment.

The incident has reignited long-running discussions within Brazilian jiu-jitsu about honorary belt promotions, political symbolism in martial arts, and the responsibility of senior instructors to preserve the integrity of the belt ranking system.

While honorary recognitions have occasionally occurred throughout martial arts history, they remain contentious, particularly when they involve the awarding of black belts, which are widely regarded as symbols of years of technical mastery, perseverance, and commitment to the art.
