Empire Jiu Jitsu
Website: www.empirebjj.com
One of the newest gyms in San Francisco, it still has a great old school feel about it. Despite what some people may say about Kurt Osiander he is very open and friendly. You will not find many gyms like this anymore since BJJ has become more sport based and less rugged. It is located on Mission street, which is around a 10 minute walk from Mission playground. It is suitable for both beginners and competitors, with various classes and private lessons if needed.
Alliance San Francisco
Website: www.alliancebjjsf.com
A very well presented and friendly gym. Alliance is probably best known for its competitive achievements but this gym also caters to casual practitioners and hobbyists. They have a variety of classes, allow drop-ins and also offer privates. The gym is found just off 4th street in the South Park / China Basin area and is easy to get too just off the highway. Please note Alliance also have another gym in the bay area, this location is in lower pacific heights.
Ralph Gracie Jiu Jitsu
Website: www.ralphgracie.com
Possibly the most popular gym in the area. It has a real old school feel to it as you would expect. It is welcoming here and classes are split so if you are a beginner you can attend the best class to suit you – the same with the more advanced students. Considering the location it is a very big mat space and also offers Muay Thai classes if you cross-train. It is located near the crossroad of Howard Street & 8th Street.
Studio 86
Website: www.studio86bjj.com
Studio86 is quite a strange name for a BJJ gym, but it is at least original. The gym is very welcoming, although it is a lot smaller than the other gyms mentioned. Perhaps if you want a smaller, closer and less intimidating gym then this is your best option. The mat space is small as mentioned but exceptionally clean – white mats do not lie! It is located on Pacific Avenue, which can be got too easily just off broadway.
Romulo Melo BJJ
Website: www.romulomelobjj.com
Romulo Melo’s academy is very warm and welcoming. It has a very friendly atmosphere and is open to drop-ins. It is located on Mason Street which is very close to Studio86 gym. This is also a very clean gym and has a pleasant and relaxed atmosphere. Of course, because of BJJ’s popularity in San Francisco there are a variety of levels in this gym from white to experienced black belt.
BJJ San Francisco (formerly 10th planet)
Website: www.bjjsanfrancisco.com
The former 10th planet school is can be easily accessed just off the central freeway. It is another small tight-knit gym but friendly to newcomers. The gym is run by Eddie Bravo’s first black belt Denny Prokopos but is no longer affiliated with 10th planet. With that said it has still kept it’s no-gi only policy so if you’re looking for somewhere to train gi in this area Ralph Gracie or Empire are nearby.
Bay Jiu-Jitsu
Website: www.japantown.baycombat.com
Located in the central of Japantown this is a very wholesome and friendly gym. If you have a child who wants to learn BJJ – this is definitely amongst the best gyms in San Francisco for them. This is not to sell the gym short, it’s a really fun and engaging environment with once again a variety of classes and skill levels across the board. Japantown is very easy to get to and is just off Geary Boulevard.
