IBJJF European Championships 2024 Review

The International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) European Championship 2024, held from January 20th to 27th witnessed a changing of the guard as a new generation of athletes ascended to the top of the podium. It was an event characterized by impressive displays of skill, thrilling upsets, and the emergence of exciting new talents.

In the heavyweight division, Adam Wardzinski proved dominant, securing the gold medal. At super-heavyweight, it was Erich Munis who reigned supreme, showcasing impressive technical prowess.

The middleweight division witnessed a stunning upset as Mica Galvao, previously a lightweight champion, moved up in weight class and claimed the gold medal. The lighter divisions saw equally impressive performances, with Mauricio Oliveira (medium-heavyweight), Elijah Dorsey (lightweight), Thalison Soares (roosterweight), Kennedy Maciel from Cobrinha’s Los Angeles gym (featherweight), and Meyram Maquine (light-featherweight) all emerging victorious.

Gutemberg Pereira etched his name in the history books by winning both the ultra-heavyweight and absolute divisions, showcasing incredible skill and stamina. On the women’s side, Gabrieli Pessanha continued her reign of dominance, claiming gold in both the super-heavyweight and absolute categories. In the absolute final, she faced off against middleweight champion Thalyta Silva, demonstrating her versatility and adaptability.

Melissa Stricker took home bronze in the absolute division after winning the heavyweight title. The lighter weight classes saw the rise of promising young talents: Shelby Murphey (roosterweight), Jessica Dantas (light-featherweight), Margot Ciccarelli (featherweight), and Aurelie Le Vern (medium-heavyweight) all claimed gold, marking their arrival on the biggest stage.
