Things to consider when buying a new rash guard
If you are a woman you will want a tapered fitting waist to stop the rashguard coming up whilst you are rolling. Although this is pretty much standard these days, you will still find some cheaper rashguards made and designed in the far east that don’t have this feature.
Secondly, you will need a sublimated design. Once again, this is quite normal for modern designs, but it is the sign of a poor quality rashguard to not have this. If you have a rashguard that is not sublimated it will wear out faster and could possibly damage the mats. There is nothing more embarrassing than wearing a black rashguard on white mats and have the colors rub off.
Lastly, you will want a good fit. Whilst this is hard to tell without trying on, you can still choose popular rashguards that have positive reviews from other people. That way if you have a relatively common body type, the trying on part has already been done for you by someone else and there is a much better chance it won’t have any weird sizing issues.
When training BJJ, do I wear a bra under a rash guard?
The answer to this question is yes. Whilst you’re free to go without a bra when training in a rashguard, most women train with a sports bra under their rashguard. Really though, it’s down to personal preference and depends on the individual.
#1 Fuji Rashguard
I may be biased because Fuji is my favorite brand. This is due to its high quality for a reasonable price, in my opinion, it is the best value for money brand on the market (that goes for Gi’s too). Whilst you will find cheaper and more expensive rashguards, this and other fuji designs are simple and well made.
Of course it is tapered and sublimated (all Fuji rashguards will be) as stated a good rashguard should be in the introduction.
#2 Tatami Rashguard
Tatami also produces high quality rashguards which are slightly more expensive than average. This is understandable since they will put a lot more time, effort and money into their design. They often go with louder, but very original work from renowned BJJ artists such as Chris Burns & Meerkatsu. Tatami will always have great quality and beautiful artwork in their products and there is nothing else like this on the market.
#3 Raven Rashguard
To be honest, Raven rashguards are very similar in quality and price to Tatami. However, the two brands have very distinct styles. Raven has more gothic and mythological based artwork such as Thor and various archangel designs in it’s large range. Their rashguards will often also have a rubber lining at the bottom to make sure the rashguard stays in place. I am not really sure if this is a positive or a negative since some people like this whilst it seems to bother others.
#4 Lotus Fightwear Rashguard
It’s a very basic design but it is also great value for money. At around 40% cheaper than the name brands above, it offers great value for money. Whilst it won’t be turning heads with any cool artwork, it is still very well made with nice sublimation and a tapered waist. Overall you can’t go wrong for the price.
#5 Black Widow Combat Sports Rashguard
Black widow is yet another upmarket brand with cool designs. The nice thing about this brand is that they donate a percentage of every sale to a domestic violence charity so you know your money is being well spent. Regarding the rashguard itself, it is a very tight compression fit, so if you prefer a loose fit this brand may not be for you. It should go without saying that this rashguard is tapered and sublimated.
