Jack Cartwright is a professional MMA fighter from Bolton, England. He is currently the bantamweight champion of cage warriors and has a professional record of 9-0. What is most impressive about this record is that only one fight has been a decision, with 8 of his wins coming inside the first round. He is trains out of SBG Mancheter and his head coach is Matt Inman.
A true mixed martial artist, Cartwright started training at a very early age and picked up wrestling when he was 8 or 9 years old. Put in his own words “I was always a fan of fighting and WWE, so I wanted to learn how to wrestle. I turned up at the local wrestling gym and fell in love with it”.
This competitive drive in the wrestling world saw him compete all over Eastern Europe since the young age of 10. Listing the countries he has competed in he says “Russia, Latvia, Switzerland, Estonia, USA and a good few more“. For those wondering about the wrestling scene in England, it is not as popular compared to USA or Eastern Europe. The competition is much more fierce in other countries compared to the UK.
A no-nonsense MMA fighter, Cartwright prefers top positions and likes to smash pass and trap peoples wrists, with his favourite submission being the D’arce choke. When explaining the difference between grappling competitions and MMA he mentions “I think a lot of fighters like to hold position over hunting submissions. They don’t want to risk certain things because if they mess up they could end up on their back eating punches.” He goes on to add “People in strictly BJJ can afford to be more lenient and give up position without consequence of strikes, so I think that’s a big difference“.
This is confirmed when we look at the modern no-gi submission only tournaments, with practitioners happy to drop back from top position to enter a leg lock.
A big believer in his own abilities and backed up by his immaculate MMA record, Cartwright says that he would enter a high level grappling competition if the opportunity came along, but his main plans are to obviously sign for the UFC and win a world championship. Something that looks very possible given his destruction of the cage warriors roster.
