2020 IBJJF Pan Am registrations drop below 3000 for the first time in over 5 years – but it’s not as bad as it seems

For the first time in over 5 years, the total number of participants registered to compete at the Pan Ams has dropped below the 3000 mark. The bulk of these competitors are typically white and blue belt and then the numbers usually get thinner as the belts get closer to black belt.

As seen, the total number of registrations was 2914 this year. Whilst it’s a drop from last years 3410 – it’s still not that bad considering. For instance, in 2016 the total number was 3116. In fact, when you put Covid19 into the equation it is actually a higher number than you may have first thought. Regardless of what your thoughts are on the safety of Coronavirus, this shows that most BJJ practitioners are still happy to compete under the current circumstances. Put another way, 2735 people registered for Nogi Worlds last year, so even with the virus more people have done Pan Ams than Nogi Worlds last year.

As seen below, the graph and data are provided by BJJData who often have cool statistics regarding all sorts of unusual BJJ information so check them out.
