Overall it was a great night at Submission Hunter Pro 60. The event featured female competitors at all weights and belts and also featured a number of gi and no gi events throughout the night. However, it was probably the main event which was the most exciting match of them all which featured BJJ specialist Danielle Kelly vs UFC veteran Roxanne Modafferi.
The no gi match was scheduled for 10 minutes but Kelly managed to secure victory via submission with a couple of minutes left. It began with Modafferi hitting a nice takedown but it was also clear that Kelly was more than happy to play guard and invert, looking for leg locking entries. At one point the match did go to Kelly’s closed guard but eventually, it was settled with a toe hold. This came from Kelly gaining the saddle position on Modafferi where she initially went for heel hooks but then switched to a toe hold to get the win. Winning meant Kelly earned the 130lb no gi champion belt.
On a side note, it was also good to see a number of gi matches which also proved to be equally as entertaining as the matches in no gi. Under similar rules, it’s clear that the gi can also be capable of putting on a spectacle for the audience.
