Yesterday saw the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu legend Fabio Gurgel earn his coral belt. This came after training as a black belt for the previous 30 years as a black belt and is a rank that few people in the BJJ world ever go on to achieve. Speaking on the promotion he said “I’m actually so proud to have gotten this far, I knew all I needed to do was stay alive and that one day it would definitely come because “exiting” Jiu Jitsu has never been an option since I was 15 years old, when I decided that this would be what I would do with my life.”
The Alliance founder is not the first legend to earn a massive belt promotion this month either, as Carlos Machado also achieved his red and white coral belt several weeks earlier.
On a side note, although coral belts are still incredibly rare, we may see more of these in the future due to the growth and longevity of BJJ over time.
