Steven Crowder – Political commentator, meme, and surprisingly…BJJ practitioner

Steven Crowder is a right-wing political commentator who has previously worked on networks such as Fox news and is probably best known for his popular Youtube channel. Due to his often outspoken views, he is something of a controversial figure online who divides his audience between fans and enemies.

Perhaps his most famous moment was the ‘Male privilege is a myth, change my mind’ banner that he displayed whilst sitting behind the banner on a desk, whilst holding up a mug. This was just one example of his vocal opinions that was used to build his public profile. It later spawned into a meme with internet users putting their own statements over his original ‘Male privilege is a myth’ logo, whilst keeping the ‘change my mind’ text at the bottom. To this day, the meme is still widely used which shows the influence and marketing of Crowder.

However, he is more than just a meme and is also a practitioner of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. His origins of training aren’t clear, but he has gone on Twitter stating he was training since at least 2013 alongside Judo. Not only this but as of 2020 he is a purple belt and has several videos referencing this. His father is also a practitioner and won gold at a competition as a white belt.

In one particular video, he choked out his sound producer Wade with a rear naked choke whilst dressed as Steve Irwin. Although he was legitimately choked unconscious, the clip was filmed in good nature and was an insight into the workings of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu whilst Crowder demonstrated his technical knowledge on the area.
