John Danaher today talked about BJJ in a self defense situation and said that confrontation had a spectrum, saying “Things can go from a minor argument in an argument…all the way up to a situation where people are fighting and dying in a street with weapons.” With this said, he claimed that whilst eye-gouges could be effective, they were sometimes too extreme and not always necessary.
He also added, “Jiu Jitsu offers very mild weapons of control all the way up to the ability to kill someone with a strangle.” Having said this, it’s clear that in Danaher’s mind he believes that BJJ can be used to counter various self defense situations regardless of their severity. Remember, Danaher had an early background in fighting with his early career as a bouncer in New York during the 90s so in this sense he knows a thing or two about combat.
