Talking to London Real TV, Royce Gracie spoke about the need for strategy when fighting. He also said that BJJ made other martial arts more complete as it complemented striking, saying “Back then it was a style against a style, not an athlete against an athlete. Jiu Jitsu became the Jitsu between all the styles. It’s who had the best strategy.”
It seems Royce was very adamant about the need for strategy and a gameplan, adding “You have to know Jiu Jitsu, it’s a strategy. A strategy is knowing what you’re opponent’s going to do. There’s no such thing as luck. You don’t win the fight when you win, you win the fight when the opponent makes a mistake.”
In short, Royce was saying that fighting used to be more fragmented whereas now most fighters will be better-rounded. Not only this, but you need a game plan whilst fighting as otherwise, you will lack direction which may result in loss.
