In an interview with IBJJF, ‘The General’ Fabio Gurgel was asked a number of questions. One of these was how he was responsible for the creation of talented students such as Gabi Garcia, Michael Langhi, Lucas Lepri and others. The Alliance founder is arguably one of the greatest coaches ever when it comes to developing top talent in BJJ so this is an answer worth listening to. He said “When you have someone and get that guy with the same armbar that you like every training session. If you don’t teach him how to defend then you get stuck in the same place, then you don’t evolve…with this concept in mind if I share what I know with others then I force myself to keep evolving. In doing that, you’re going to have people raising the bar in Jiu Jitsu.”
He also added “Jiu Jitsu’s an endless process of learning. Nobodies ever good enough in Jiu Jitsu. Yoiu need to keep learning in order to evolve. If you stop for 2 years when you go back to the back Jiu Jitsu is completely different. How could I have so many Wolrd Champions in my gym at the same time and control the egos? So you need to study in order to succeed.”
