It’s official, Break Dancing has been added to the Olympics for Paris 2024. The reason behind this was supposedly that it would open up the Olympic games to a younger audience. However, do young people really practice break dancing? The sport arguably peaked in the 80s and has since faded into obscurity.
At the same time, this comes as a slap in the face for those who lobbied to get BJJ into the Olympics. Whilst many practitioners will argue they don’t care and ADCC is the next big thing, it will still sting for some. For instance, from a personal level it is a proud moment to represent your country and earn medals for your nation. This joy will not be happening for the elite of BJJ it seems. Not to mention the financial benefits that come with becoming an Olympic champion. As other martial arts such as Judo and Taekwondo have been established in the Olympics for some time now, it does make you wonder what is going on?
