When it comes to holding his tongue, Chael Sonnen doesn’t really hold back. This week he had a few words to say about the recent Israel Adesanya promotion too. He began by saying a fairly outlandish comment which was also massively incorrect by stating, “Whatever coach gave Adesanya his purple belt isn’t try to serve and praise Adesanya. They’re trying to self-serve themselves…meanwhile said coach doesn’t have any Abu Dhabi champions.”
Well, it seems Andre Galvao would have something to say about that. If you’re talking Abu Dhabi champions then JT Torres springs to mind, someone who has achieved gold twice whilst under Galvao’s tutilage. These golds were at ADCC, which literally stands for ‘Abu Dhabi Combat Club’. Not only this but it’s literally the biggest grappling prize of them all. Whilst Torres isn’t technically a Galvao black belt, he trained under him extensively during his gold medal haul and continues to do so. Not to mention others such as Josh Hinger and Keenan Cornelius who both took silver at ADCC under Galvao. The roster continues with the likes of Hulk Barbosa, the Ruotolo twins, Rafaela Guedes and many more. In short, Galvao’s gym is arguably the best in the world right now for talent.
It should also be noted that Galvao himself has the most medals in ADCC history. Sorry Chael, but these comments seem way off.
