In a recent video with London Real, Renzo Gracie was asked how he built his gym in New York and responded, saying “It was a funny thing, I never thought I’d leave Brazil. In my head”. In a reference to living in New York, he later continued, “Before we closed we had 510 students there, if you can make it here, you can make it anywhere”
He also added that New York’s multicultural settings helped as he could go to Brazilian supermarkets and flying to Brazil and Japan for fights at the time was only $400. Since then, it’s fair to say that it was a good job that he left Brazil as his gym is one of the biggest and most iconic in the world.
