Rickson Gracie is undoubtedly one of the best to ever do it in terms of BJJ and MMA. He was recently interviewed by another BJJ-MMA icon in Damian Maia. Maia confessed that Rickson was his idol and was in awe of his words. Here, Rickson spent over 30 minutes discussing his take on BJJ and how it makes people more confident and prepared for physical and mental confrontations.
Rickson said, “Jiu Jitsu is very gentle. It’s an art that makes people come together. You have to feel the opponent, there’s a connection right there. It’s a perception of energy, that connection of the perception transcends the fight. Just by shaking a hand you can read a guys personality. Jiu Jitsu teaches how to approach and feel confident in situations. In Jiu Jitsu, the important thing you learn is about yourself. You start to become comfortable to be in the hell you live in”
The last sentence is particularly appropriate. As the saying goes ‘You have to feel comfortable with getting uncomfortable’. This is something that BJJ helps all practitioners in dealing with sticky situations.
