This week, Gordon Ryan gave upcoming BJJ prodigies a financial advise lesson in how to build your brand and develop a stable income that involved teaching, saving and living within your means. This is a fairly different model compared to most full-time competitors who put all of their hopes and dreams into making a living from competition.
Gordon Ryan said this on his Instagram account and added “Young athletes – competition is a great way to BUILD YOUR BRAND, but because grappling is a participant sport where most who watch are those who participate, most of your income will be from teaching.”
He continued, “Being a good teacher is FAR harder than being a good competitor. Being good at jiu jitsu and being good at winning competitions aren’t always synonymous.”
As it happens, Gordon Ryan is one of a select few that have made millions of dollars from Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. It’s safe to say that he knows what he’s on about with this in mind.
