Gordon Ryan may have stopped arguing with Andre Galvao for the time being, but has now switched to the likes of Pat Downey. The pair have a bit of beef going back to when they competed at a hybrid rules match which saw them face off in both a wrestling and BJJ match (unsurprisingly Downey won the wrestling, whilst Ryan won the BJJ).
Anyway, since then Downey has transitioned into competitive BJJ and has been training in Florida with Cyborg and Vagner Rocha. Last night he competed on the Third Coast Grappling Grand Prix event and lost in the first round to Pedro Marinho in the first round. Here, Marinho swapped a heel hook to a belly down knee bar which may have caused some damage to the knee of Downey.
Ryan took to Instagram to poke fun at the loss, saying “Pat Downey thinking it really took me 20 mins to finish him, gets leg broken by Pedro immediately.” In all seriousness, hopefully, Downey makes a swift recovery as his entry into BJJ has been exciting so far, and the fact he is on these cards shows his progression in such as short space of time.
