For those who are obsessed with the BJJ lifestyle, you may be prone to listening to people rant on for hours on end about Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. No, we’re not on about the older guys at your gym – we’re on about a BJJ podcast. Over the past few years, BJJ podcasts have exploded in popularity along with podcasts in general.
In short, these discuss practically anything going when it comes to BJJ culture. From techniques and training methods, to stories, to habits seen on the mats…practically everything is discussed on these shows and here’s the best ones to look out for.
Table of Contents
Matburn Podcast
This podcast is hosted by legendary grapplers Keenan Cornelius and Josh Hinger. Here, they have an array of talented BJJ guests and discuss a number of different topics. Cornelius has always been vocal when it comes to his thoughts surrounding BJJ, but this podcast also delves into other topics too.
It’s great to see two friends discussing stuff in a casual environment. The only issue with this is that it’s very patchy in terms of consistency. This may be due to the hectic schedule of Cornelius, but regardless it’s nice to catch every now and then.
BJJ Mental Models Podcast
If you’re after a serious discussion of BJJ, then this podcast is ideal. Here, they have senior guests who discuss their training methods and techniques. For those that want something lighthearted, this probably isn’t the podcast for you.
However, if you like to delve deep into the how and why of BJJ where technique and learning is concerned, then this podcast is awesome. Expect long conversations on why certain moves work so well, training efficiently and a variety of intelligent guests and conversation.
The Chewjitsu Podcast
This podcast is run by Nick ‘Chewy’ Albin who has a big Youtube following. A veteran black belt and skilled wrestler, Chewjitsu is kind of an agony aunt where BJJ is concerned. Because of this, he’s good at expressing things and explaining the culture more than most. With this in mind, this podcast is ideal for beginners who are looking to learn more.
Chewy also has a number of big-name guests with who he talks with. However, in all honesty sometimes it’s best with just him and his friends.
Raspberry Ape Podcast
Raspberry Ape is the nickname for UK black belt Dan Strauss. If you’re a fan of the British accent, then this is a great listen. Having said that, Strauss is more than just an accent and is also an MMA commentator as well as strongman so his conversations aren’t purely about BJJ.
Perhaps the best guest on this podcast is Kurt Osiander. Here, he lets loose whilst Strauss asks some interesting questions and the rest makes for classic listening. Expect a number of UK grapplers due to the location of the studio.
BJJ Fanatics Podcast
Hosted by Bernardo Faria, this podcast has a pull of some of the biggest names in the martial art. Also, if you like watching the BJJ Fanatics videos, then you’ll probably enjoy this. In short, this podcast is more of an extension of the Fanatics videos in terms of conversation. Basically, guests will delve deep into techniques and also talk about their history in the sport.
For instance, there’s one particular episode with John Danaher which goes into some detail about takedowns. One issue with this podcast is that it’s very irregular and can go months without any new episodes. The length is also completely random, and is sometimes only 20 minutes long. This may or may not be a good thing, depending on you preference.
BJJ Brick Podcast
BJJ Brick has been going for years and is probably one of the longest ones going. To be precise, it actually began back in 2021. Here, two veteran practitioners talk all things Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and often this looks at the culture around the martial art. It also has over 350 episodes and is consistent with its content, so if you like it then that’s good news.
One nice addition to BJJ Brick is that it’s not a conversation between world champions. Whilst this is nice, it’s also good to be able to relate to people who aren’t super human too.
A Fistful of Collars Podcast
Run by FloGrappling, this podcast has the professionalism and slick quality that you’d expect from Flo. Often it has big topics such as “Who’s had the biggest influence in BJJ?” and so forth. This means, it’s less small talk and usually focuses on one big debate.
As you would expect with Flo, there are also some big names who occasionally appear on this. However, this isn’t always the case.
The Strenuous Life Podcast
If you know Youtube and BJJ, then you will probably know of Stephan Kesting. Here, Kesting is the host of this podcast and as ever, is always a fun and welcoming host. Like many on this list, sometimes he had big name guests, but also sometimes it’s just Kesting on his own.
An interesting feature of this podcast is the episode length. Sometimes it’s just Kesting talking about a random subject for 10 minutes and that’s it. Other times, he goes deep and some can be hours in length. Another cool addition is Kesting’s blend of other martial arts which are quite common too.
The Jiu Jitsu Dummies Podcast
This podcast has been running for a few years and is beginner friendly. For further proof of this, just look at its tag line which reads “The Jiu Jitsu Podcast you wished you had when you were a white belt.” Basically, it’s just three guys talking about what they love in a casual setting.
What’s nice about this podcast is that it features view points from all levels. With this said, it really is great for BJJ newbies and it isn’t just black belts dominating the conversation either.
Grappling Central Podcast
As the title suggests, this podcast is about grappling and so it also features bits on wrestling, MMA and grappling in general. Whilst this is nice, it’s also good for BJJ nuts out there too. Here, they have a number of big-name BJJ guests and some very interesting guests.
At nearly 500 episodes in length, this is probably the longest going podcast out there related to BJJ. Be warned, if you become addicted it’s a long way back with this one.
