It’s no secret that lately police reform has been looking at integrating Brazilian Jiu Jitsu into police training. The likes of Rener Gracie and Andre Galvao amongst others have been big advocates for the move which would see police officers armed with grappling skills.
The idea behind this is that it potentially leads to less fatalities, as police wouldn’t have to punch as much and could detain criminals with pins and holds without harming them.
Today this sentiment was shared by former NYPD detective Angel Maysonet who aired his thoughts on Fox news. Here, Maysonet said “I think it would be very helpful if they trained police officers in BJJ. When I was a police officer in the 90s on the street, I was able to use force. Now police officers are afraid to use force or to punch somebody in the face when they need to be punched. If you teach these officers grappling techniques and they don’t have to use force and grapple with people it would be helpful.”
So, will US police forces get a reform and introduce more BJJ into the training curriculum? Time will tell, but the last 18 months or so has certainly gravitated towards the idea.
