Can a belt be taken off you in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu? According to Cyborg, the answer to that question is yes. Just last week, news broke that the ex-Fight Sports competitor Marcel Gonvcalves still had ties with Cyborg, Vagner Rocha and their respected schools.
The result was that Cyborg responded with a statement that failed to convince the BJJ community that he had dealt with the matter correctly. Recently, he responded with another statement that aimed to address the allegations more concisely which can be read about below on his Instagram account.
Interestingly, further in to the statement, Cyborg said “As for Marcel Goncalves, I am stripping him of his black belt and have severed all ties between him and our organization.” This shows that in BJJ, a black belt isn’t just based on skill, it’s also meant to represent your moral growth as a person and your ethics.
