This weekend saw UFC Welterweight Vicente Luque promoted to the rank of black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. This isn’t too surprising as he was a brown belt for a few years and his last two fights saw him darce choke both Tyron Woodley and Michael Chiesa.
Luque also was awarded a black belt in lute livra and was promoted to both black belts by his teachers at Sanford MMA – both Toquinho Saldanha and Erik Silva. This is a rarity to get two black belts on the same day and shows what type of athlete Luque is.
Writing on Instagram, Luque stated, “Today I had this great surprise. Got my black belt in Jiu Jitsu and also in Luta Livre!! Big thanks to my masters Toquinho Saldanha and Erik Silva”
If things go his way, then Luque could also face Kamaru Usman in the near future for a shot at the Welterweight title. With his clear BJJ skills, perhaps Luque has the answers to Usman’s style and could be the man to dethrone him.
