The gyms below are some of the best BJJ gyms in Brisbane. These gyms aren’t ranked in order such as best to worst as some people will be looking for different things such as a competitive gym, friendly environment, or simply somewhere to just drop-in as a one-off.
If you are from out of town, most gyms will be welcome to drop-ins although you may want to check with each individual academy on what their policies and prices are regarding wearing your own gi due to academy affiliations.
We’ve linked each website so that you can find the contact details of every gym. It turns out that there’s a lot more to Australia than Craig Jones and gorgeous beaches! As it happens, Brisbane is a pretty great place to live if you’re training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in the area. It has a lot of gyms that have huge mat spaces, huge timetables, and classic Australian charm and friendliness.

ATOS Brisbane
Website: https://www.atosbjjbrisbane.com.au/
ATOS Brisbane is taught by Antonio Mota who has trained BJJ for over 20 years and unsurprisingly got his black belt under Andre Galvao. As you can expect with ATOS, it’s got the typical black and blue color scheme and its mats are clean and hygienic.
It also has a decent schedule with day classes at lunch and as you’d expect the bulk of the classes are in the evening. A nice touch is that it also offers classes at 6AM, so if you’re an early riser on a tight schedule then it may be a good fit. As this is ATOS, you may need to enquire about hiring their ATOS branded gi before turning up.
Arte Suave BJJ
Website: https://artesuave.com.au/
Founded in 2014, Arte Suave does BJJ the right way and probably has one of the busiest timetables in the world, let alone Brisbane. Here, you can train at 5.30 or as late as 20.30. There are also weekly drilling classes, open mat, and lots of kids classes. Plus its open 7 days a week. Sound like Jiu Jitsu heaven? It’s also got a relaxed uniform policy, big mat space, and a successful competition team. What more could you ask for?
Garra BJJ
Website: https://garrabjj.com.au/
Garra has a bit of everything and even does women-only classes. Therefore, if you’re a female who is conscious about rolling with men, then this may be a good place to train at. Generally speaking, it’s also pretty beginner friendly.
Interestingly, Garra also has two locations; one in north Brisbane and one in the city center. Expect a massive mat space, friendly atmosphere, and even yoga classes at Garra BJJ.
Lemos Brisbane
Website: https://lemosbjjbrisbane.com.au
Founded by Bruno Lemos, a Brazilian who has trained BJJ since the 90s, this is actually an affiliate of Alliance, so you know it has high standards. Offering both gi and no gi, this gym has a real community feel and is more than just a place to train. For instance, when doing gradings, they also do a barbeque which has acai. Overall, it’s how BJJ should be done and Lemos has done a fantastic job with this one!
One Purpose BJJ
Website: https://www.onepbjj.com/
Located in the Salisbury area of Brisbane, One Purpose BJJ has a schedule that rivals that of Arte Suave, so if you want to train twice daily then it’s not an issue. It also has a number of teachers too which is good to add diversity to your training and will make you a more rounded grappler.
As well, this has a ginormous mat space, successful competition team and lots of happy spaces. Like Arte Suave it gets a lot of stuff right.
Brisbane BJJ
Website: https://brisbanebjj.com.au
This gym has a cool feature of having a free weights and cardio gym for its BJJ members. For those who want to get stronger or improve their aerobic capacity then this is a great set up. It should be noted that this gym doesn’t offer as many classes for adults as the other gyms do. However, it has a pretty big schedule for kids which is great if you’re a parent that wants your kid to train in a safe and friendly environment.
