Yesterday evening saw BJJ veteran Craig Jones face off against MMA and UFC legend Donald Cerrone at Combat Jiu Jitsu Worlds. This resulted in Jones eventually submitting Cerrone after a few minutes. However, truth be told this was quite a playful affair that looked closer to a gym spar rather than Combat Jiu Jitsu.
Early in the match, Jones secured a nice hip toss takedown but failed to capitalize on it. He eventually looked for a few leg lock entries which Cerrone defended well. At one point, Jones even got into closed guard and even attempted a buggy choke. It almost looked like Cerrone tapped, but he was actually slapping the side of Jones’s body which is legal under CJJ rules.
Eventually, Jones managed to take Cowboy’s back from the turtle position and managed to sink in a rear naked choke. Interestingly, Jones had not thrown a single open palm strike during the entire match. However, in total Cerrone only threw around five strikes, so it was quite a tame affair.
This event wraps up the Combat Jiu Jitsu series for this year which is hosted in Cancun, Mexico by Eddie Bravo. It will have also served Jones well for some much needed practice before his ADCC run in 2022.
