Whilst Joao Miyao may have been given his BJJ black belt years ago, he’s obviously not a black belt in other martial arts. However, this week he earned his Luta Livre black belt from Nicolas Renier. For those wondering, Luta Livre is essentially very similar to no-gi and is a cross between standard no-gi BJJ and catch wrestling. Basically, it’s similar with a bigger emphasis on gaining a top position.
Speaking on the promotion, Renier said “Today I had the huge honor to give with Jarbem Pacheco the Luta Livre Black Belt to Joao Miyao, one of the best grapplers in the planet. Joao began to train LL with Jarbem and did privates to learn like a “normal student”. We are very happy to welcoming him in the Luta Livre family.”
With this said, it’s not surprising to see Joao Miyao given the Luta Livre black belt considering his grappling background and ADCC history. Interestingly, he isn’t the first BJJ sensation to train Luta Livre either.
