Whilst Gordon Ryan is best known for his abilities in no gi Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, less is typically known about his work in the gi. Interestingly though, there have been a few times where Gordon Ryan has been sighted training in the gi over the years. For instance, he actually used to regularly compete in the gi up until brown belt, which is around the time that he transitioned fully into no gi.
However, recently he was seen training in the gi as a black belt. This video was recorded by FloGrappling, whilst Gordon was seen training at New Wave at the Renzo Gracie academy in Texas. Here, he was sparring against a black belt and unsurprisingly, Gordon still looked as good as ever.
Although Gordon submitted his training partner a couple of times, for the most part he looked fairly slow and kept it playful. Despite some people thinking that he would struggle with lapels and gi grips, this simply wasn’t the case. Instead, Gordon Ryan looked pretty dominant. This has prompted some to speculate whether Gordon will transition to the gi – seeing as he has already conquered no gi. Although nothing is confirmed, it wouldn’t be too surprising, seeing as Gordon has the likes of Nicholas Meregali to train with these days who is an elite competitor in the gi. Watch this space.
