This week saw a shock announcement made by B-Team stalwart Nick Ortiz. On his Instagram account, Ortiz claimed that he was quitting the B-Team where he had previously been a teacher. Although he wasn’t one of the main founders of the B-Team, he had clearly made a big impact on the students during his time there.
In a lengthly post, Ortiz claimed “My time with B-Team has come to an end. I’ve taught my last class this morning, and I feel appreciative for the opportunity I was presented with and that I was able to help as many people as I could, however, I no longer feel like an asset to the B Team (both the gym and the brand)”
Although Ortiz’s message was positive and praising towards the B-Team, this also hinted that he didn’t feel worthy of training there anymore. He also claimed that he would “look forward to taking this time to study more and training at different gyms, experiencing the rest of Austin’s jiu jitsu.”
This is an interesting statement, as Ortiz had previously trained under John Danaher at New Wave. However, it is assumed that he will train elsewhere. In a separate part of his farewell message, he also dropped that training at B-Team costed $300 per month. Although this is more than the average gym – you have to remember that this isn’t your average gym and as Ortiz put it himself, the teachers there were ‘world class’.
