Gordon Ryan recently shared an image of him training alongside MMA legend Jon Jones. This prompted a fan on Instagram to ask the question, “Is Jon Jones the strongest grappler you have trained with?” which sparked a debate in the comments section. Based on the small clip provided, it was clear that Jon Jones isn’t your average grappler while also showing off his significant size alongside Gordon Ryan.
Interestingly, Ryan replied and stated that it certainly wasn’t Jones who was his strongest ever training partner. Instead, it was Dan Manasoiu. For a few years now, he has trained extensively with the self-proclaimed ‘Jiu Jitsu giant’ who stands at 6’5″ tall and is of Romanian heritage.
Although Gordon Ryan has trained with his fair share of genetic freaks and MMA fighters, it’s actually not too surprising that Dan Manasoiu is his strongest ever opponent. Just looking at him shows the sheer size of the man, which dwarfs Gordon Ryan in comparison.
Specifically replying, Ryan wrote: “No, that’s Dan Manasoiu by a landslide. No one (on the mat) feels nearly as strong as him.” Now, you may think that someone like Jon Jones might be in a similar category for strength, but apparently not.
This also makes you wonder if Manasoiu will have a bright future ahead of him due to his strength and size. He has already qualified for ADCC – but under John Danaher’s tutelage, it’s entirely possible that next time he could go all the way. As for Gordon Ryan, this also shows an insight into why his grappling is so good and technical.
