Over the past year, a lot has been said about police training and grappling when making arrests. Today, AT OS leader Andre Galvao gave his take on the matter. He showed an Instagram video of a man grappling with a policeman in North America. The policeman was out-grappled on his own and ended up in bottom scarfhold. Here, the policeman was pinned without the skills to escape.
Luckily for him, two other police came to his aid, but in a 1 vs 1 he would have easily lost with potentially awful consequences. Even with a 3 vs 1, the other two police were fairly clueless in terms of grappling and also lacked skills. Galvao’s response was this “Cops should know jiu-jitsu. Every single first responder should learn jiu-jitsu daily. Not one class per week. It must be every single day, it must be a lifestyle. You need to scramble (roll) EVERY SINGLE DAY!” he also added “The problem is not the training, the problem is there’s no training. There’s too much BS training. If you can’t handle a small situation like that, you will never be able to handle any situation.”
Whist many from BJJ have advocated for police to train BJJ regularly, only Galvao has called for it to be trained daily.
