This has been the match which everyone has been asking for over the past year and now it seems that it may possibly become a reality. Whilst still in its infancy, there is a real possibility of Galvao vs Ryan taking place. This would be great news for BJJ fans everywhere as the two are at the peak of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu right now and it would be the most inconic match in years.
The origins of the potential bout have been rumbling on for months with Ryan taking shots at ATOS and Galvao on Instagram, particularly calling out Ronaldo Junior who he was meant to fight. However, things took a turn on Sunday night when ATOS member Kaynan Duarte lost to Cyborg Abreu via heelhook, which was the first heelhook of Cyborg’s black belt career in competition.
This lead to Ryan mocking Duarte and claiming his defense to the attack was weak, also showing footage of the same submission being done on him last year by Lachlan Giles at the 2019 ADCC Absolutes. This lead Galvao to respond -which can be seen below. In short, he also pulled up footage of Ryan losing to Felipe Pena twice by exposing his back from an attempted leg entanglement.
This annoyed Ryan who proposed that Galvao put his money where his mouth was. Ryan claimed he would put up $1 million of his own money if he lost against him in a sub-only Nogi setting. Galvao appeared to agree to this proposal that he could put up $500,000 of his own money to create the match.
Whilst these two are undoubtedly rich enough to fund this superfight – the reality of it actually happening remain somewhat slim. This comes after Ryan has proposed similar setups to other grappers down the years with little reply. However, it doesn’t mean the match won’t happen and it would be an excellent spectacle if it were to take place.
