UFC BJJ has officially announced a featherweight superfight between reigning bantamweight champion Mikey Musumeci and UFC featherweight Bryce Mitchell, set to headline UFC BJJ 11 on September 24. The matchup marks the first time an active UFC fighter will compete against a reigning UFC BJJ champion. The other championship matchup features a far more balanced encounter which will see Mason Fowler face off against Nick Rodriguez.
While Mitchell is a dangerous grappler by MMA standards, the consensus within the Brazilian jiu-jitsu community is that this is a massive step up in competition. Musumeci is widely regarded as one of the greatest no-gi technicians of his generation, boasting multiple IBJJF world titles and an undefeated run under the UFC BJJ banner.
Mitchell has legitimate submission credentials, with 10 submission victories in mixed martial arts, but pure submission grappling is an entirely different discipline. Without the threat of strikes or wrestling transitions, Musumeci’s elite guard work, leg lock game, and positional control are expected to give him a significant edge.
