Why the MMA record of Richie Martinez is not what it seems…

UFC, Cage Warriors, KSW, Bellator. Depending on where you live in the world, you probably have heard of at least two of these promotions. Which brings us on to the next promotion XFS. As you can see from the article, they do not have the most moral foundations and were willing to do just about anything to get viewers before they went out of business.

The XFS has been accused of having unsanctioned fights on native reservations, bringing soccer moms out of the crowd to fight and generally just trying just about anything to get publicity.

Richie Martinez

Richie Martinez, aka “The Boogeyman” is a very solid black belt instructor and competitor under Eddie Bravo and runs his own academy in San Francisco. To put any doubt aside, we are not questioning his BJJ credentials. He is clearly not the greatest of all time but is obviously an extremely high level black belt competitor and has showcased his abilities on the likes of Quintet & EBI.

However, his MMA record is a little sketchy to say the least. He has a record of 3-2, with 3 of these wins being in the aforementioned XFS, the 2 losses being in an entirely different, but legitimate promotions (Brave combat & Titan Fighting which are still currently active as of August 2020).

To make matters worse, all 3 wins at XFS were inside the first round, but the same can be said for the losses at the legitimate promotions.

The Opponents

Phelan Fleming

Phelan Fleming had 10 fights, all of which were in XFS. His record, 0-10. We would like to congratulate him on the last fight he had in XFS where he finally made it to the second round. For reference Richie Martinez got him with a necktie after 21 seconds. Tapology shows this as an RNC but the video clearly shows otherwise.

Edward Darby

Edward Darby is another XFS round one specialist and has the physique and style of your untrained uncle. His stats are somewhat vague but we can’t actually find any evidence he ever made it to the mythical second round. At the time of fighting Richie Martinez he was currently 0-12 and finished his career at 0-22. In the fight it’s another Japenese necktie, ending the fight a little slower this time at 56 seconds.

Julian Hernandez

I don’t need to write much about Julian that hasn’t already been mentioned. As you’ve already guessed, yes, he is also a first round specialist and has a 0-14 record in XFS. Unfortunately, there isn’t a video of this fight but you will just have to believe me that he also lost by a Japanese necktie in 22 seconds, completing both the pattern and the XFS trilogy.

Fight Summary

Did the boogeyman face complete jobbers? It certainly looks that way, the combined record of his three opponents is 0-36 with all fights being in XFS. They don’t have a single win between them and all rarely made it past the first round.

The fighters who are responsible for beating Richie Martinez and giving him the 2 losses are Le’Ville Simpson and Ahmed Amir. These two fighters have respectable records with 9-5 & 10-3-1 respectively. They both stopped Martinez in the first round.

I will leave it to the reader to decide what they think of this “3-2” MMA record, but I think if you read the evidence provided above, along with the videos you will come to an easy decision. I am not even sure why these MMA fights happened, Martinez is a very solid black belt as discussed earlier and having one-sided MMA fights does not add any credentials to his already well-established career.
