In a recent video uploaded to youtube by Jedi Does JiuJitsu the video shows 1st Degree Black Belt Robby Malof defeat 4 wrestlers in a wrestling competition. In fairness to the wrestlers, Robby obviously has a very high level of wrestling which can be seen in the video. He defends all of the takedowns fantastically and provides some very good offense of his own.
With that being said, this was a wrestling competition with no submissions allowed. In the final match, his toughest competitor (who is an NCAA all American wrestler) can be seen complaining to the referee about a guillotine attempt.
The video is analysed really well and explains what Robby is doing, but more importantly why he is doing it.
Robby has several IBJJF medals and is a professional MMA fighter with a 2-0 record. So perhaps the wrestlers will not feel too bad about losing to a high level grappler like this, but still will not like to lose under their own ruleset.
Overall, the video displays why it’s important to have good takedown defense, especially if you want to compete in ADCC competitions where takedowns are heavily incentivised.
