John Danaher on the importance of defensive soundness before attacking submissions

John Danaher recently spoke in depth about the importance of defensive soundness before attacking submissions. More specifically, he claimed that ‘position before submission’ gets replaced by ‘defensive soundness before attacking a submission’. The idea behind this is to avoid counter attacks from your opponent which is particularly common with leg-locks.

Too often you will see heel hooks countered with the defensive player. Danaher added “Don’t get into submission shoot outs if you can avoid them. Rather, create situations where you can fire at will without return fire.”
