A list of interesting Roger Gracie facts

Is Roger Gracie the Goat?

With a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu record of 76 black belt wins to 7 losses, it’s hard to dispute that Roger Gracie isn’t the greatest of all time. Although Gordon Ryan lays claim to this title in no gi, he has also claimed that Roger is the greatest in the gi. Roger Gracie has won 7 gold medals at Worlds in the gi which is unprecedented. He also won 2 golds at ADCC, proving that his BJJ also translates over to no gi very smoothly.

As well as this, 2 years after retiring from competition, Roger came back to defeat Marcus Buchecha in a superfight. Here, he successfully took Buchecha down, passed him and choked him from the back. At the time, Buchecha was considered the best in BJJ, which further proved Roger’s dominance.

Has Roger Gracie lost / who has beaten Roger Gracie?

Over the years, Roger Gracie has lost 7 times at black belt. In BJJ, it’s pretty much impossible to not lose at some point. However, Roger has impressively never been submitted as a black belt which is a ridiculously impressive claim.

Perhaps the thorn in his crown is Xandre Ribeiro who has beaten Roger on points 3 times. However, Roger has beaten Ribeiro 6 times, and has also submitted him. He has also lost twice to Jacare Souza before his transition into MMA, as well as Marcio Cruz and Jon Olav Einemo earlier on in his career.

In terms of MMA, Roger’s record stands at 8-2. Here, he fought mostly in Strikeforce but also enjoyed brief spells at UFC and ONE. He fought twice at ONE, winning the Cruiserweight title in his last ever fight. However, his 2 losses came from a knockout and unanimous decision, proving that he is not invincible in MMA.

How heavy is Roger Gracie and how tall is he?

Roger Gracie is a big man and mostly competed at under 99KG. Standing at just under 6’4, it’s fair to say that he is not a small athlete to say the least! Nonetheless, he is also known as perhaps the most technical BJJ practitioner ever, which shows that you can be both big and highly skilled.

Who is Roger Gracie’s father?

Roger Gracie’s father is Mauricio Gomes, who is one of a select few that has a BJJ coral belt. Mauricio has trained alongside Roger for many years and the pair often teach together. He is also responsible for bringing BJJ to the UK, when he settled in Birmingham, England. Here, he created Europe’s first ever Gracie Barra gym which is now run by Braulio Estima. These days, Gomes still trains regularly in London, which is where Roger’s ‘RGA’ gym is located.

Why did Roger Gracie move to England?

Roger Gracie moved to the UK as a teenager to focus on Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and to learn discipline. Back in 2000, he moved as a blue belt. The reason is that he was arrested in Brazil for shooting a paintball gun at passersby. It seems that his move to England was very successful, as he is now known for his maturity and lives a fairly quiet, humble lifestyle.

What is Roger Gracie’s net worth?

Roger Gracie is a comfortable millionaire. This should come as no surprise, considering he is probably the most famous BJJ competitor ever. Alongside his prestigious BJJ and MMA career, he also has several affiliate gyms, an online instruction site and also does seminars that attract a big crowd. His house is also located in London, which is not a cheap place to live by any means.
