12 of the most inspirational Jean Jacques Machado quotes for BJJ

Jean Jacques Machado is a BJJ champion and one of the famous Machado brothers. Simply put, he is arguably one of the most influential practitioners in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Back in his competition days, he helped popularize the butterfly guard which has since gone on to become a staple of BJJ. What’s more, he did this whilst competing with a deformed hand which would have made grips and general fighting much harder.

He since went on to mentor the likes of Eddie Bravo whilst still teaching regularly and spreading the Jiu Jitsu message from his gym on the west coast of America. He is also one of a handful of people to have achieved the coral belt which literally takes decades to earn. Here are the 12 most inspirational quotes from Jean Jacques Machado.

“It is great to train hard and become a champion, but it is greater to be a good human being”

“The more you know, the less you use. To use less, you need to know more”

“Jiu Jitsu is not a martial art. It’s literally a way of seeing life with better eyes”

“It is important to lose to learn that you can do better. You just need to learn to do a little more, it makes you become a better fighter”

“Breathe. It was just a bad day. Not a bad life”

“I’m very fortunate to have the brothers I have. They helped me a lot and we have a very close relationship”

“Some people say no way, and some people will find a way”

“You don’t do Jiu Jitsu. You feel Jiu Jitsu”
