New Zealand Ex-Rugby Captain Tana Umaga trains BJJ & earns silver at Masters Worlds

If you’ve ever played rugby then you’ll know that it has a few things in common with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Specifically, a rugby tackle isn’t too dissimilar to a double-leg takedown. Similarly, both activities require a level of athleticism and desire when things get tough.

Speaking of rugby and BJJ, fans may be shocked to hear the recent success of Tana Umaga who scored a silver medal at the 2022 Masters Worlds IBJJF competition. For those wondering, this competition is exclusively targeted for competitors aged 30 and over.

Here, Tana Umaga competed in the super heavyweight brown belt and looked to be thrilled with his medal. Obviously, certain physical and mental attributes from his rugby playing days will have also helped his medal run.

During his playing days, Umaga captained the New Zealand rugby team and won 74 caps for his country, scoring 36 tries in the process.
