As if 2022 couldn’t get any weirder, Joe Rogan just got called out by WWE legend Ric Flair. Earlier this week during a conversation on his JRE podcast, Rogan had criticized the legitimacy of Ric Flair’s finishing move, the iconic figure four leg lock.
Speaking on the technique, Rogan said, “A bunch of wrestlers got mad at me. I was trying to explain how dumb a figure four leg lock was because I was like, he was literally giving up an inside heel hook.”
For those new to BJJ, a heel hook is the worst type of leg submission which can easily break the knee. Because of this, it is considered as a highly dangerous and risky submission to do on someone.
In true Nature Boy style, Ric Flair wasn’t one to hold his tongue and used Rogan’s comments to give himself a little self-promotion, writing on Twitter: “You’re Getting A Lot Of Attention For Calling Me Out! The Only Way To Resolve This Is To Have Me On The Show. I’ll Put You In The Figure Four Leg Lock & We’ll See If You Can Take It! LFG! WOOOOO!”
In all honesty, it looks like these comments were mostly playful banter between the two, at least Ric Flair seems to be a good sport about it. However, if we’re serious about his assessment then Joe Rogan was correct. The reason for this was that setting up the figure four is overly complicated and is more of a show move than something that is genuinely legitimate.
Regardless, it certainly looks exciting which is what professional wrestling is all about. Interestingly, Ric Flair had previously been touted to appear on Rogan’s podcast but it never transpired. Check out the figure four submission being applied below.
