This week saw the EBI Absolutes go down which saw Nicky Rodriguez crowned as the champion. However, during this event, 10th Planet’s Kyle Boehm was less than impressed with John Danaher and the possibility of ‘fake’ close-out matches between two of his students (Luke Griffith and Giancarlo Bodoni).
In a statement released on Instagram, Boehm stated that if the two faced each other at the EBI, they fake it, and that “This team has done it multiple times, including at this tournament at EBI 3” (previously referring to when Garry Tonon defeated his teammate Eddie Cummings on the way to the final). Because of this, Boehm claimed that Josh Hinger (who lost in the final to Tonon) “Was robbed of a potential win and a lot of money.”
He also went on to say how this also happened to Marcus Buchecha in the Absolute ADCC division a few years back. Despite Boehm’s claims, there is no proof that any of the DDS or New Wave students have ever put on fake matches when competing against each other. Still, there has been talk of fake close-outs over the years which have disappointed fans and competitors alike. John Danaher has yet to comment on these allegations.
