Snake Pit Wigan Set To Host Josh Barnett Vs Owen Livesey

In just over two weeks, ex-UFC fighter and veteran catch wrestler is set to take on former Judoka Owen Livesey in a catch wrestling match on the 28th October.

The match itself will be fought under catch wrestling rules and takes place in the historic Snake Pit gym in Wigan which was founded by the legendary Billy Riley.

Grappling fans will be interested to see if the younger Livesey is able to beat a catch-wrestling veteran under a ruleset that seems to favor both men, with no guard pulling being considered by either man regardless of what the rules were in this match.

Catch Wrestling Differences To BJJ Rules

  1. Objective: The primary objective in catch wrestling is to pin the opponent’s shoulders to the mat, or to make them submit to a hold.
  2. Pins: Catch wrestling has a strong emphasis on pinning an opponent, which is not present in BJJ or ADCC rules. A pin can win a match.
  3. Submissions: While submissions are allowed and utilized, the variety may be different due to the emphasis on controlling and pinning opponents.
  4. No Guard: There is generally no “guard” play as seen in BJJ. Fighters in catch wrestling often work from the top or from a neutral position. As a result of the back being on the mat resulting in a losing position, only an upright butterfly guard could really be considered.
  5. No-Gi: Catch wrestling is traditionally practiced without a gi.
  6. Best of 3: Unlike BJJ, many catch wrestling bouts are fought as a best of 3 series.
