BJJ Athletes – Frederic Vosgrone Biography Interview

Frederic Vosgrone is a BJJ athlete who hails from Dusseldorf in Germany. However, he has since relocated to London to pursue his training and career in BJJ. Competing at over 90KG, Vosgrone also has a background in wrestling which makes him a tough opponent to say the least.

Vosgrone started training BJJ in 2012 back when he was 16 years old. His fascination with BJJ began through playing the UFC video game which involves submissions and grappling. After that he decided to try it for himself as in his own words “It looked cool”.

In terms of guard play, Vosgrone favours the half guard and uses variations such as deep half when needed. From half guard his favourite sweep is coming up to a single leg takedown which ties in with his wrestling background. When on top, Vosgrone favours pressure passing which at over 90KG is a nightmare to defend. This involves a variety of crossfaces, bodylocks and other nasty positions.

After years of training in London, he received his black belt at age 23 years old after years of competing and consistent training. This was from his teacher Dickie Martin who teaches at Carlson Gracie London. His wrestling coach is Lyubomir Kumbarov, a decorated wrestler from Bulgaria who also lives in London. Vosgrone also adds that Kumbarov is the hardest person he has ever sparred with due to his skill and experience over a lifetime of grappling.

In terms of awards, Vosgrone’s biggest achievement is third place in the Nogi Worlds at black belt. Although he is mostly a Nogi specialist, he also trains and competes in the Gi. He is also a regular on the superfight scene, recently winning £10,000 at the Polaris Grand Prix. However, Vosgrone has future ambitions such as winning the coveted ADCC competition and also becoming the UFC champion. With his background in grappling the transition to MMA may be quite easy too.

Finally, Federic Vosgrone would like to add thanks to his gym, coaches and training partners.
