BJJ Athletes – Jed Hue Biography Interview

Jed Hue is a British BJJ competitor who started training aged 16. The aim of his BJJ training was originally due to his background in striking with ambitions of becoming an MMA fighter. Since then he has primarily focused on Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and the grappling side of his game. More specifically, these days he focuses on Nogi which may have been influenced from his MMA origins.

Hue recognises himself mostly as an aggressive guard player and specialises in Butterfly and Single Leg X Guard. As covered in our previous articles, these positions are both heavily linked. Butterfly is a common defensive guard in MMA and has consistently been used as one of the most common positions in BJJ.
However, due to the nature of Nogi, Hue is also equally comfortable on top passing guard. As Nogi has a connection with wrestling, a good passing game is just as important as playing guard.

Branching on the Nogi element, Hue mostly competes at submission only events which are a modern part of the game. At the time of writing (August 2020) he is currently undefeated at sub only competing between the light and middle weight brackets. This mirrors the style of his main teacher, Ross Nicholls who is himself a Nogi sub only specialist at a similar weight. With this in mind, Hue can be found training in Grand Union. Grand Union was founded by Ross Nicholls and several other Roger Gracie black belts and is based in London.

In terms of submissions, Hue claims the Armbar is his favourite move. This can be seen through his various submission wins whilst at Purple belt where the Armbar was commonly used. The armbar is commonly used by Gordon Ryan, who Hue names as one of his biggest influences alongside Australian grappler Craig Jones.

Hue is also forging his own path in BJJ. Winning the British open in 2019, he has firmly put his name on the map. Adding a number of super fight wins including Polaris, Hue is fast becoming one of the best grapplers in Britain.
