Competitor turns up dressed as a Unicorn – is this disrespectful towards BJJ?

Last nights F2W event in Dallas Texas saw an interesting turn of events. One competitor, Emil Fischer turned up in a Unicorn onesie, along with a Unicorn inflatable and Unicorn rashguard. It was a mixture of flamboyant loud colours, which are usually more related with a kids cartoon as opposed to a BJJ competitor.

However, it turns out that Fischer has been rocking this look for years now and competes regularly in the attire. He went on to lose the match by decision after getting taken down into mount by opponent Sloan Clymer who applied waves of pressure from the position.

The match was mentioned by FloGrappling who described it as “When your opponent thinks he’s a unicorn so you squeeze his face and take his soul”. This prompted a fierce debate in the chat with some calling him a clown, and one calling his outfit ridiculous. However, others where quick to defend Fischer saying it was ironic and shouldn’t be taken too seriously. As was mentioned, Fischer is actually a serious competitor with various accomplishments under his belt.

This opens the dialogue whether it was just playful comedy or whether his outfit was disrespectful considering the fighting roots of the martial art. Whatever your opinion it is clear that sport BJJ has now arrived at a place very different from the gritty roots of BJJ street fights in Brazil as the sport continues to change throughout the world
