This week saw New Zealander Robert Whittaker promoted to black belt under his teacher Alex Prates. Training out of Gracie Smeaton Grange, Whittaker claimed to have been training in the gi for 16 years now – as he put it “Honoured to be handed my black belt from my coach and friend Alex Prates. Started Gi 16 years ago and I’m stoked to have hit this milestone in my career. Lookout world. If you’re in so much as a long sleeve shirt. Danger.”
Not only is Whittaker a BJJ black belt, he is also a black belt in Karate and Hapkido and is known for his devastating strikes in the Octagon. A true martial artist, some of his BJJ competition matches can also be found on Youtube where he blends an MMA style with sport BJJ to great success.
