Comedian and social commentator Russell Brand was recently promoted to purple belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Over the years, Russell Brand has spoken glowingly about his love for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and is has been training it for a few years now.
This week saw him get promoted to purple belt under Chris Cleere, who is a Roger Gracie black belt in Wycombe, England. Cleere had previously promoted Brand to blue belt a few years back. Upon receiving the purple belt, Brand wrote on Instagram, “Big Day in BJJ. Honoured to receive my purple belt from Chris Cleere. And also a purple eye (from Jackson Kickboxing)”
This means that Russell Brand is roughly half way through his BJJ training on the way to achieving black belt. Statistically, the vast majority of purple belts go on to make black belt – so it’s fair to say that in the near future, Russell Brand could legitimately make it as a BJJ black belt.
