Is Jiu Jitsu set for a team USA vs Brazil match?

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt Isaque Bahiense recently proposed a team superfight format based on the rivalry between Gordon Ryan and Andre Galvao.
On Facebook he wrote, “You’ll see your son doesn’t run away from the fight. That’s my suggestion, what would be yours? Expecting a position from them…” Basically, he wanted to see the best of Brazil square up to the best of the USA. So, who did he pick?

On the proposed Brazilian team, he had Felipe Pena, Mica Galvao, Patrick Gaudio and Leandro Lo as well as himself. The US team featured Gordon Ryan, Keenan Cornelius, Nicky Rodriguez, Nicky Ryan and Garry Tonon.

So, what does this mean and is it likely to happen? The reality is that it would take some organization, but if the likes of Flograppling got on board and funding was available then it’s certainly a possibility.

Interestingly, Bahiense managed to put himself on the Brazilian squad which is a great piece of self promotion. However, Leandro Lo is also one of his picks, who is primarily known as a gi player. Lastly, there’s also the fact of Keenan Cornelius sharing a dressing room with Gordon Ryan and Garry Tonon. He has not got on with them for a while now so from a logistical point of view this would be tough to bring together. Having said this, it would still be a great look for BJJ if they did compete side-by-side. Of course, it should be noted that these are merely the picks of Bahiense and things could change.

Nonetheless, it would be a great spectacle if it actually happened. Many would be willing to see the likes of Pena vs Ryan yet again and that alone would draw in a crowd.
